Sports injuries, Osteoarthritis & Degenerative diseases of the joint cause damage to the cartilage and ligaments over the years of use, the joints lose lubrication resulting in chronic pain and inflammation.

Traditionally Joint pain treatment includes anti-inflammatory medicines, pain killers, steroid joint injections, arthroscopy and eventually joint replacement surgery.

Recent advances in medical technology and research have improved the options for joint preservation.  One of the new innovative technique is Amniotic fluid injection, amniotic fluid is a nutrient rich substance that contains high concentrations of Hyaluronic acid, hormones, healing factors, stem cells, cytokines and growth factors all of which can be beneficial for healing of the damaged tissue.

This innovative technique involves Amniotic fluid injection in the damaged tissues. AF is obtained from fetuses, it is purified and filtered at specialized Labs.  Several recent studies and clinical trials have shown that the amniotic fluid is safe & effective, it is naturally regenerative, it reduces the inflammation and provides lubrication.  While cortisone can reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief, amniotic fluid can actually promote the restoration of the damaged tissues and alleviate pain.

Who is a candidate for AF treatment:

  1. Arthritis of hips, knees and shoulders.
  2. Knee injuries resulting in torn cartilage and meniscus.
  3. Soft tissue injuries to tendons and ligaments.
  4. Sports injury resulting in joint and tendon pain.
  5. Rotator cuff tear

How is the treatment performed:

The procedure is performed in the office, the patient agrees to the procedure & signs the consent forms.  In the procedure room the joint area is cleaned and injected with the amniotic fluid.  Procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes and the patient is able to return home.  Anti-inflammatories should be stopped 2 weeks prior to the treatment. The treatment can be repeated in a few months if necessary.

Other treatment options:

Cortisone Injections:

Cortisone is an excellent anti-inflammatory, it has been used for decades to reduce the inflammation and pain relief. Cortisone injection can temporarily alleviate the patient’s symptoms but it does not promote healing or promote regeneration.

Protein Rich Plasma (PRP) injection:

PRP has been used for decades in the medical field.  The process involves retrieving blood from the patient, sending it to a centrifuge machine to filter out red blood cells, this leaves a concentrated substance that is rich in platelets, growth factors and plasma.  Once the PRP is filtered and purified it can be injected into the damaged tissue, PRP promotes tissue regeneration and healing of the joint components.  Since the PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood there are no side effects or adverse reactions but the quality of the fluid and regenerative power is dependent on the patient’s healthy platelets and the filtration technique.

Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery:

Joint surgeries are complicated and involve risks, surgeries may vary from arthroscopic repair to the total joint replacement. Surgeries are performed by Orthopedic surgeons in the hospital setting and sometimes require long-term rehab. You must consult an Orthopedic surgeon for other treatment options.
